What is a lane departure crash?
Crashes that occur due to a driver leaving their lane, including
run-off-road, fixed object, head-on, rollover, and sideswipe crash types (VHB).

In 2019, over half of all fatal crashes involved a driver leaving the designated lane (NCDOT).
What causes a lane departure crash?
Lane departure crashes result from a number of root causes.
Human error
Distraction, drug or alcohol use, speeding, and/or inexperience.
Environmental conditions
Rain, snow, ice, wind, or fog.
Vehicle maintenance
Brakes and tire pressure.
Road conditions and design
Curves, banking, or superelevation.
