The Institute for Transportation Research and Education is partnering with the Albemarle Rural Planning Organization and the Triangle J Council of Governments on a project to improve the safety of kids walking and rolling.

The purpose of the Safe Routes to School program is to:

  • Enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
  • Make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age
  • Facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools

This program is made possible by the NC Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Non-infrastructure Transportation Alternative Program.

Kids Learn How to Act on the Road from You

Your child looks up to you and absorbs your behavior. By modelling the habits that will keep them safe on the road, you can ensure your child’s safety for years to come.
